The Lions Clubs International is worlds largest NGO engaged in humanitarian services since 101 years in over 210 countries worldwide.Much of the focus of Lions Clubs International work as a service club organization is to raise money for worthy causes. All funds raised by Lions Clubs from the general public are used for charitable purposes, and administrative costs are kept strictly separate and paid for by members. Some of the money raised for a club’s charity account goes toward projects that benefit the local community of an individual club.
ABOUT : The Gujarat Cancer Society
The Gujarat Cancer Society was formed in year 1961 under the patronage of the H.E. Governor of Gujarat, Shri Mehdi Navaz Jung. The founders of the society visualized a need for developing modern facilities for poor cancer patients of the newly formed State of Gujarat. The M.P.Shah Trust of London donated 55000 sterling pound and the dream of creating a cancer hospital was realized. With the constant support of the Government of Gujarat, help from the Government of India and whole/hearted financial support from philanthropists of Gujarat, The M.P. Shah Cancer hospital was commissioned in the year 1965. The Government of India granted a 150% tax exception on all donations to the Gujarat Cancer Society. This tax exception has helped rapid development of the M.P. Shah Cancer Hospital. For sustaining growth and development of the Cancer Hospital, the Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute was formed as an autonomous body in the year 1972. The Gujarat Cancer Society became an active member along with the state authorities in spearheading cancer care activity in State of Gujarat.Today The Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute is a full-fledged comprehensive cancer care and research Centre recognized by Government of India Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as State Cancer Institute. Government of Gujarat has given another assignment to Gujarat Cancer Society for developing a Medical College in Ahmedabad. Government has given 25 acres of land on Naroda Road in the year 2009 and Society has established a general hospital of 600 beds and medical college with approval from Medical Council of India and Gujarat University for 750 undergraduate medical students. For this project Gujarat Cancer Society has received generous support from the donors of Gujarat.
